It's been nearly a year since I properly jumped out of my seat watching a movie.

That was during Unhinged on one of our rare outings to the cinema last summer.

At Nottingham Cineworld this week, we realised what we have been missing - thanks to John Krasinski's pulsating A Quiet Place Part II.

It prompted no less than six involuntary jumps - far more than any movie could possibly have done at home.

And remember this was a sequel so, in theory, Mrs W and I should have known what was coming.

In order to keep the film as fresh as possible, I had avoided any trailers so I was a bit concerned that this was a prequel when Krasinski appeared on-screen as aliens began their invasion of earth.

Actually, the scene was a device to introduce to Emmet (Cillian Murphy), a fellow dad of a children's baseball team.

They are watching a game with their families when monsters arrive in flaming vessels and began to kill everyone they can hear.

Yep, the monsters move with great speed and can pick up the slightest noise but they are very short-sighted, so the only way that they can be avoided is by maintaining silence.

This is rather tricky in the case of the Abbott family because they have a small baby who cries loudly just like babies do.

Thus, mum, Evely (Emily Blunt) has devised ingenious ways to keep him quiet.

Meanwhile, there is the added dimension that her daughter (Millicent Simmonds) and son (Noah Jupe) are deaf.

Simmonds becomes the focus of the film as her character takes charge of the family's efforts to escape the land of the monsters.

She is terrific throughout and it feels natural that Blunt, Murphy and Jupe follow her lead.

During key moments, Krasinski allows the audience to experience the world as she would by using only muffled sound.

It is a sublime piece of writing and direction from one of Hollywood's great modern talents.

A Quiet Place Part II shows off all of his attributes and it's one of the most thrilling, suspenseful movies audiences will watch this year or any other year.

And it seemed rather appropriate that a lockdown movie should lead us out of our own isolation during the pandemic.

Laughs: Two for us, more for others in the cinema.
