DEAD PIGS
Cert TBA
122 mins
BBFC advice: TBA

Please persevere with Dead Pigs because it is so much better than I expected after its rather haphazard opening.
With a light and often humorous touch, Cathy Yan has woven together parallel plotlines while exploring family relationships and even the Chinese economy.
It features an unlucky pig farmer (Haoyu Yang), a hairdressing salon owner (Vivian Wu), a waiter (Mason Lee), a disenchanted rich girl (Meng Li) and an American ex-pat architect (David Rhysdahl) whose worlds converge as thousands of dead pigs are found floating downriver towards Shanghai.
The farmer is saddled with a huge debt after an investment in technology sees him swindled out of all of his money.
Meanwhile, he sees an opportunity to cash in on the house of his parents which is co-owned with his sister, the aforementioned hairdresser.
The house is the last remaining to be demolished before an ambitious development is built under the instruction of Rhysdahl's character.
The American is a curiosity because he is largely undemonstrative and yet is clearly hugely ambitious.
Meanwhile, the farmer's son considers himself a disappointment because he only has a job in a restaurant and can't help his desperate dad.
Somehow, however, he manages to attract a wealthy girlfriend.
Anyway, the farmer's pigs are among those struck down by a mystery killer disease and he can't afford for the local authority to dispose of them so he heaves them into the river.
He isn't the only one - the dead pig story is one which dominates the local news.
The combination of high-quality writing and fine acting prompted me to feel pity for each of the splendidly drawn characters - especially's Yang's.
At the same, there is a quirkiness to the movie which means that the audience is never in the doldrums for long.
Dead Pigs is original and refreshing. The films which Mubi picks don't always come off but this one certainly does.

Reasons to watch: Quirky plot with well-drawn characters
Reasons to avoid: It needs perseverance

Laughs: Smiles rather than laughs
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 8/10

Did you know?
In 2010, Cathy Yan was a reporter for the Wall Street Journal and wrote an article about rookie directors breaking through in the film industry. A decade later, she is one.

The final word. Cathy Yan: "“I’ve always wanted Dead Pigs out in the world. Distributors didn’t really know what to do with it, and they weren’t willing to take the risk. Is it foreign language? Is it not? It’s a difficult film to put in a box.” NME
